The Oprah Angel Network
- Oprah Winfrey created this public charity in 1998 after a 1997 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show where she encouraged viewers to use their lives to make a difference in the lives of others, through volunteer work and charitable giving
- 100% of the donations fund charitable projects and grants across the globe. Oprah Winfrey personally covers all administrative costs associated with the charity so that 100% of all funds raised go to charity programs.
- Helped establish 60 schools in 13 countries
- Supports women's shelters
- Builds youth centers
- "Build an Oprah House" with the Habitat for Humanity home construction program
- "The World's Largest Piggy Bank" where people donated spare change to a scholarship fund for underprivileged children
- 50 high school students across the country granted $25,000 scholarships; recipients were the Youth of the Year for the Boys and Girls Clubs in each of the 50 states
- Partnership with "Shoes on the Net" website to donate footwear to those in need
- In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Oprah asked her viewers to open their hearts and they did. As of September 2006, donations to the Oprah Angel Network Katrina registry total more than $11 million. Homes were built in four states—Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama—before the one year anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Winfrey matched her viewers' donations by personally giving $10 million to the cause.
