According to The Wall Street Journal, Pontiac G6 automobiles were given to each of the 276 audience members for the 2004 season opener of The Oprah Winfrey Show at a price of $28,500 each. In this episode, Winfrey throws her arms in the air and exclaims, "Everybody gets a car!" When asked by People magazine why she decided to donate a car to everyone in the audience, she replied, "Just because we can," implying she personally incurred the $7.8 million expense. However, according to Advertising Age, the cars were donated by Pontiac as part of a deal that would earn Pontiac an estimated $20 million in free publicity. The G6 was the only corporate sponsor on Oprah's official Web site, www.oprah.com for 90 days. From comScore data, over 600,000 Americans visited Oprah.com on Tuesday, September 14 alone, representing an increase of more than 800 percent versus the prior four Tuesdays. Pontiac.com saw an increase in website visits of more than 600 percent compared to the daily average, drawing more than 140,000 visitors on Tuesday, September 14.

In the MSNBC.com article "Enough's enough: Oprah is oversaturated" by Michael Ventre, he wrote:
"..And Oprah completely mishandled the James Frey affair and allegedly ambushed the fake memoir writer and his publisher, Nan Talese, on her show last July, according to a piece in Vanity Fair. Even if there was a miscommunication in what Frey’s appearance on her show would be about, it came across as a powerful woman seeking revenge rather than a national icon seeking the truth. Going from Oprah to Geraldo is not a smart career move. " I also felt that they were ambushed --- no one messes with Oprah and she wanted to prove it, getting her revenge on that show. Don't be mistaken, I'm not in favor of what James Frey did, but I just think Oprah could have handled it TOTALLY differently. I think it was an actual sneak peek to the REAL Oprah. |

People, thank Pontiac for those G6 cars that Oprah gave away, not Oprah! Oprah benefited personally by that give-away -- exclusive advertising dollars by Pontiac. She could have at least given the audience members a cash prize to cover what they "lost" by receiving that gift.

I think Bill's got a point. I'd LOVE to see him on her show, but I won't hold my breath
